Craft-on in NYC

Please join us on the first Sunday of every month from 2-6 pm.
We’ll be at Etsy Labs!
325 Gold Street, 6th Floor, Brooklyn

This place is AMAZING! The labs are home to all kinds of special tools & equipment, plus lots of donated supplies for us to use (but it would be a good idea to bring thread & stuff if you want to use the sewers). They are all about encouraging people to make stuff, just like us, so we get to have this special event every month where access to all of their goodies is totally free. If you like it there you can always to back for their Monday Craft Nights or take a class!

There is a couch, plus tables & chairs to spread out on. Our meetings are a casual drop in affair, come any time, bring anyone, bring anything you are working on or come & just check out what everyone else is up to. Snacks are welcome.

Please e-mail the Very Esteemed Callie Janoff for more information or sign up for the monthly e-mail update using the form in the sidebar to the right.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Craft-on In NYC

Aloha!

Please join us for the next monthly meeting of
the Church of Craft
Sunday 1/4 2-6pm
at Etsy Labs!
325 Gold Street, 3rd Floor
Downtown Brooklyn

Happy New Year! I’ve said it before: I don’t do resolutions, I just don’t like to think of it as a once of year kind of thing. So I’m not going to ask you to resolve to honor your own creative spirit more than you already do. I’m not even going to ask you to resolve to make it to the meetings you always mean to attend. The Church of Craft just isn’t that kind of thing. You already are the incredible crafty person you dream of being, and you don’t need me to tell you so, and you don’t need to prove it to anyone. What I’m offering you this month is a place to come to see your love of creating reflected in the faces around you. If you make it this month or not, know that your making is important! Craft on!

The Etsy Labs are well stocked: all the favorite tools and supplies are still there, and they are so well organized! There are lots of tables and chairs and a couch for us to spread out on. More about the labs at EtsyLabs.etsy.com in the profile section.

Etsy is all about encouraging people to make stuff, just like us, so we get to have this special event craft-on every month, where access to all of their goodies is totally free. If you like it there you can go back and craft Monday evenings!

Our meeting will be the usual casual drop in affair, come any time, bring anyone, bring anything you are working on or come & just check out what everyone else is up to. Snacks are welcome.

Book Corner

I’ve been delinquent in letting you all know about three awesome new books out in the last few months, all from devoted friends of the Church of Craft.

Firstly: Faythe Levine’s companion book to her forthcoming documentary Handmade Nation! Gorgeously illustrated by the talented Kate Bingaman-Burt, including essays by Yours Truly, Andrew Wagner, Garth Johnson, Susan Beal and Betsy Greer, and is co-authored by Courtney Heimerl.

The documentary and the book follow the rise of DIY culture over the last 10 years. If you are familiar with or new to the Craft Scene this is an inspirational taste of the crafty lives Faythe has documented.

And Betsy Greer’s essay finds full bloom in her new book Knitting For Good. This book has lots of personal tales of a craftily considered life, in addition to great patterns you can knit for yourself or for charitable giving.

Last but certainly not least is Two Bits, from our very own Parson Chris. Who is this dude who devotes so much unpaid time to make the Church of Craft website look and work so smashingly? Well he is a really smart guy who studies and teaches about humans and information technology. This book is all about free software. He says it is really all about craft.

Get them at your library or wherever you can afford to get books these days!!

Join MAD and the Church of Craft for a night of hands-on making, music, food, and drink in celebration of the Museum’s current exhibition Second Lives: Remixing the Ordinary. Local do-it-yourself artists (your fellow CofCers!) will demonstrate their personal skills and help guide you in creating your own projects. Techniques will range from making notebooks out of junk mail to making yarn out of old sweaters, among other contemporary twists on classic crafts. In addition to do-it-yourself workshops, the DIY Salon will include handmade snacks, craft beer, and a live DJ. Guided tours of Second Lives will be available. Over 200 people did-it-themselves at this event last year, so don’t miss out this time around!
